Further on this road leads to the upper Ahaura and tributaries such as the Trent and Waiheke. The best water is downstream of SH6. Above the Gorge is some wonderful fishing for mostly large rainbow trout in a pristine wilderness environment. A river that caters for all levels of fishing skills though the upper reaches are really only for the more experienced angler. It is quite difficult to get to most of the shoreline around this picturesque lake. Backcountry fishing for rainbow trout in the Hokitika River is quite challenging and requires a fair bit of walking.
